Receipt obligation and nature conservationEspecially from the point of view of the so-called "receipt obligation" or "cash register obligation", the area of cash register rolls has gained massively in volume in recent years and has become the focus of media attention in particular since 01.01.2020
The focus of the media discussion here is on the use of chemical substances to develop and fix the print image, the level of paper consumption, and the question of "residual waste" or "back into the paper cycle".
Yet we find the bigger problem with cash register rolls elsewhere - namely inside: in the core.
Up to now, there has been a core in every conventional roll. In addition to the plastic core, there is also the cardboard core, which, as a remnant, is somewhat less harmful to nature than its plastic counterpart, but the production is also energy-intensive here
and the necessary resources are simply wasted, because the cardboard core also remains a pointless waste product at the end of the roll's life.
Environmental protection plus quality
coreless also shows that the urgently needed protection of nature does not have to be accompanied by a loss of quality or high prices.
When developing the coreless rolls, it was particularly important to us that the rolls remain stable even without a core and produce a good and durable print image so that they can be used for the required document purposes in the long term. At the same time, of course, they also meet all the specifications relating to the paper. coreless rolls are therefore BPA-free.
Thanks to our patented development, they even deliver the print image right to the end of the roll - in contrast to rolls with plastic cores, which usually leave a paper residue at the end that is disposed of with the core. So here, too, our rolls avoid further waste. While one might intuitively assume that rolls without plastic cores are less stable, practical experience shows the opposite: deformations that occur from time to time due to transport damage cannot be repaired with conventional receipt rolls. They have to be disposed of unused. The new coreless rolls are also resource-saving in this respect: they can usually be returned to their original shape by simply pressing them and thus remain usable.
Sustainability as a business idea?
coreless is English and means coreless - the term describes our innovative method of rolling up the paper of a receipt roll without a plastic core. The high impact of plastic on the environment begins with the extraction of raw materials, continues during production, and unfortunately does not end with disposal in household waste. Three quarters of the garbage in the sea consists of plastic, specifically 4.8 - 12.7 million tons of plastic end up in the oceans every year.
This plastic is an ever-growing problem and costs tens of thousands of animals their lives every year. The plastic core of a conventional candy roll takes 500 years to decompose. However, it does not biodegrade, but breaks down into hundreds of thousands of particles of microplastic, which already pollute the oceans considerably, are ingested by marine animals and thus ultimately end up on our plates and in our glasses through contaminated drinking water. We have to stop the plastic flood and coreless can make a contribution to this. Of course, the coreless project is part of our business; but
coreless is also a matter of the heart for us. In the first six months after the launch of the product, we have already saved more than 2.5 tons of plastic waste with the help of our customers.
